Chinese Scientist Wins Prestigious Matthias Prize for Superconductor Breakthroughs

Chinese scientist Jin Changqing, a research professor at the Institute of Physics under the Chinese Academy of Sciences, has secured the 2026 Bernd T. Matthias Prize — the highest global accolade in superconducting materials research. The award recognizes his groundbreaking work in discovering novel superconductors through advanced high-pressure synthesis methods, positioning him as the sole recipient worldwide this year.

Jin’s research spans multiple superconducting systems, including cuprate-based, iron-based, and hydrogen-rich materials, with applications poised to revolutionize energy transmission and quantum computing. The prize committee highlighted his “breakthrough contributions” in expanding humanity’s understanding of superconductivity, a field critical to next-generation technologies.

Established in 1989 and awarded triennially, the Matthias Prize honors scientists driving innovation in superconducting exploration. Previous laureates include researchers from the United States, Japan, and Germany, making Jin’s win a significant milestone for China’s growing influence in advanced materials science.
