As China prepares for its annual Two Sessions political gatherings this March, Zimbabwean Ambassador to China Abigail Shoniwa highlighted the transformative potential of Chinese modernization for African nations during an exclusive interview in Beijing. Speaking to CGTN, Shoniwa emphasized how China’s achievements in poverty alleviation and smart city development provide a blueprint for Zimbabwe’s growth.
“China’s focus on high-quality development isn’t just about economic metrics – it’s about creating sustainable systems that uplift entire communities,” Shoniwa stated, citing rural revitalization programs that reduced China’s poverty rate by over 70% since 2012. These successes come as Zimbabwe seeks to expand agricultural exports to the Chinese mainland, with recent agreements allowing Zimbabwean citrus and tobacco producers direct access to China’s 1.4 billion-consumer market.
Cooperation now extends to green energy projects worth $300 million under Beijing’s Belt and Road Initiative, including solar farms in Matabeleland Province and lithium processing plants harnessing Zimbabwe’s mineral wealth. “China’s technological leap in renewable energy offers us a chance to industrialize without repeating environmental mistakes,” Shoniwa noted, adding that 12 Zimbabwean engineers are currently training at China’s National Energy Conservation Center.
With China-Africa trade hitting $282 billion in 2025, analysts predict Zimbabwe could see 6.2% GDP growth this year through expanded infrastructure partnerships and value-added mineral exports. As the Two Sessions convene to shape China’s 2026 economic agenda, African leaders await new policies reinforcing South-South cooperation frameworks.
