China’s ‘Hospital Companions’ Bridge Gap in Digital Healthcare

As China's healthcare system accelerates its digital transformation, a compassionate new profession is gaining momentum across the Chinese mainland. Hospital companions – trained assistants who guide patients through complex medical processes – have become essential allies for vulnerable groups navigating automated systems.

This year, elderly patients like 72-year-old Shanghai resident Wang Liqun find renewed hope through these services. "The machines confused me, but Ms. Zhang helped me register, find my clinic, and even explained my prescription," Wang told KhabarAsia, describing her companion's assistance during a recent checkup.

Three key factors drive demand for these services:

  1. 80% of China's tier-1 hospitals now use fully digital registration systems
  2. Inter-provincial medical consultations increased 40% since 2025
  3. Urbanization trends leave 23 million seniors living apart from family support

Professional companion agencies have emerged in major cities, offering services ranging from wayfinding to medical translation. The industry is projected to grow 25% annually through 2028, according to healthcare analysts.

"This isn't just convenience – it's about preserving dignity in healthcare access," noted Peking University social researcher Dr. Chen Wei. While the model currently focuses on urban centers, pilot programs aim to expand services to rural areas by late 2026.
