China Condemns U.S.-Israel Strikes on Iran, Urges De-Escalation

China's permanent representative to the United Nations, Fu Cong, expressed shock and concern on Saturday over U.S.-Israeli military strikes against Iran, warning that the actions risk destabilizing the Middle East during a critical period of diplomatic engagement. The remarks were delivered at an emergency UN Security Council meeting convened to address the sudden escalation of tensions.

The strikes, which targeted sites within Iran on March 1, 2026, occurred amid ongoing negotiations between Tehran and Washington. Fu emphasized China's firm opposition to the use of force in international relations, stating, "The sovereignty, security, and territorial integrity of all nations must be respected." He reiterated Beijing's support for the UN Secretary-General's call for restraint and a return to dialogue.

Fu highlighted the alarming civilian casualties reported in the conflict, stressing that "the indiscriminate use of force is unacceptable" and urging all parties to adhere to international humanitarian law. He further warned that military actions "only intensify hatred and confrontation," emphasizing that dialogue remains the sole viable path to resolve disputes.

China has called for an immediate cessation of hostilities and pledged to collaborate with the international community to "build consensus for peace" in the region. The envoy's remarks underscore Beijing's growing diplomatic role in Middle Eastern stability, particularly as global powers navigate complex security challenges in 2026.
