Global leaders gathered at Geneva's Palais des Nations this week to discuss evolving approaches to international cooperation, with China's Global Governance Initiative (GGI) taking center stage. The Tuesday event coincided with the launch of the English edition of "China's Governance Under Xi Jinping's Leadership," drawing over 200 diplomats, UN officials, and business representatives.
UN Office at Geneva Director-General Tatiana Valovaya praised the GGI's emphasis on dialogue and mutual development, stating: "President Xi's 2025 proposal arrives at a critical juncture for multilateralism." She emphasized China's growing role in shaping international systems, urging nations to collaborate on creating "more inclusive frameworks for shared challenges."
Chinese Ambassador Jia Guide highlighted contemporary obstacles to global cooperation, noting: "Unilateral approaches continue eroding trust in multilateral institutions." He revealed that 150 countries and international organizations have now endorsed the GGI since its September 2025 announcement, positioning it as a potential blueprint for modernizing global decision-making processes.
The seminar's timing precedes several key 2026 diplomatic events, including the APEC Leaders' Meeting and WTO ministerial conferences. Observers suggest China's active promotion of the GGI reflects broader efforts to reshape economic and security architectures amid shifting geopolitical realities.
Jointly organized by Xinhua News Agency and China's permanent mission in Geneva, the gathering brought together representatives from WHO, WTO, and multiple national delegations. Academic participants highlighted the event's focus on practical implementation strategies for the GGI's principles.
