China has pledged to safeguard the legal interests of businesses after Panamanian authorities assumed control of two Panama Canal ports operated by Hong Kong-based CK Hutchison. Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning reiterated Beijing’s stance on Tuesday, February 24, 2026, emphasizing that the enterprise retains the right to pursue legal recourse.
The ports, critical hubs in global maritime trade, have been managed by CK Hutchison for over two decades. The sudden takeover has raised concerns among overseas investors, particularly those from Hong Kong and the Chinese mainland. Analysts suggest the move could test cross-border commercial relations in the Americas-Asia trade corridor.
Mao stated, “China consistently advocates for the lawful protection of enterprises’ rights and interests worldwide.” CK Hutchison, which operates in 50 countries and regions, confirmed it is evaluating next steps. The dispute coincides with ongoing negotiations between Panama and the Chinese mainland to expand bilateral trade agreements this year.
