World’s Largest Hybrid Energy Project Hits Milestone in Sichuan

Construction of the Lianghekou hybrid pumped-storage power station, the world's largest project of its kind, achieved critical progress this week as workers completed excavation of its underground powerhouse and initiated concrete pouring for the downstream reservoir. Located on the Western Sichuan Plateau at 3,000 meters above sea level, this engineering marvel leverages the massive Lianghekou Reservoir as its upper water source and the Yagen Level-1 Hydropower Station reservoir below.

Powering Asia's Green Transition

The project represents a cornerstone of China's renewable energy strategy, combining pumped-storage technology with conventional hydropower to stabilize regional electricity grids. When operational, it will provide flexible peak-shaving capacity and enhance power supply reliability across Southwest China.

High-Altitude Engineering Breakthrough

Construction teams overcame significant technical challenges posed by the thin-air environment and complex geological conditions. The simultaneous completion of underground excavation and reservoir foundation work marks a pivotal moment in the $2.1 billion project's timeline, keeping it on track for phased commissioning starting in late 2027.
