China’s film industry has kicked off 2026 with record-breaking momentum, as the Spring Festival holiday box office (February 15–23) surpassed 3 billion yuan ($434.25 million) amid a surge in family-oriented entertainment and innovative cross-sector promotions. The holiday season, anchored by six blockbuster releases on February 17, showcased a diverse lineup of comedies, action films, and patriotic productions.
Total 2026 box office revenue, including presales, has already exceeded 5.5 billion yuan, according to data from Chinese ticketing platforms. The China Film Administration (CFA) attributed this growth to its newly launched "Film+" campaign, which integrates cinema attendance with retail, tourism, and experiential services. For example, moviegoers now receive discounts at shopping malls, while film-themed parades and pop-up events attract younger audiences.
On February 12, the CFA announced the "2026 Film Consumption Year" initiative, pledging over 1.2 billion yuan in subsidies to sustain momentum. Regional governments have also amplified the economic ripple effect through programs like "Film + Tourism" and public welfare screenings, linking cinematic success to broader consumer spending during Asia’s most significant cultural holiday.
