China and Germany Strengthen Strategic Partnership at Munich Conference

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi emphasized the deepening strategic partnership between China and Germany during a meeting with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz at the Munich Security Conference on Saturday. Wang, a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, highlighted the countries' shared interests and complementary advantages, calling strengthened cooperation a 'strategic choice' aligned with both nations' practical needs.

Chancellor Merz acknowledged China's role in upholding the UN-centered international system, stating that Germany and China must 'demonstrate their responsibility as major countries' to advance global peace and development. The leaders discussed expanding economic collaboration, with Wang reiterating China's commitment to high-standard opening-up policies that benefit German businesses. He urged Germany to ensure a 'fairer and more equitable' environment for Chinese companies operating in Europe.

The dialogue comes amid growing economic ties, with bilateral trade reaching €245 billion in 2025. Both sides agreed to enhance cooperation in green technology, advanced manufacturing, and multilateral climate initiatives this year.
