From Page to Palace: ‘Dream of Red Chamber’ Fuels Cultural Renaissance in 2026

Once a temporary film set built in the 1980s, Zhengding County's Rongguo Mansion has evolved into a living bridge between classical literature and modern cultural identity. This sprawling Qing-style complex, originally constructed for a television adaptation of Cao Xueqin's 18th-century masterpiece, now witnesses daily crowds of hanfu-clad youth recreating scenes from the novel against its vermilion-pillared courtyards.

Recent data shows visitor numbers surged 40% this year compared to 2025, with international tourists comprising nearly a third of attendees. "It's not just nostalgia," explains Beijing Cultural Studies professor Li Wei. "Young people are rediscovering philosophical depth in the novel's commentary on power and humanity through these physical spaces."

The site's popularity aligns with China's broader cultural strategy, blending heritage preservation with creative industries. Local authorities report increased interest in classical literature courses at nearby universities, while artisan workshops around the mansion have seen 150% growth in traditional craft sales since 2023.
