DPP Authorities Criticized for Disrupting Cross-Strait Ties; Taiwan Residents Voice Frustration

The Chinese mainland has sharply criticized Taiwan's Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) authorities for undermining cross-strait exchanges, accusing them of prioritizing political agendas over regional stability. At a press briefing on February 10, Zhu Fenglian, spokesperson for the State Council Taiwan Affairs Office, stated that DPP leader Lai Ching-te's administration remains the 'biggest obstacle' to normalized interactions across the Taiwan Strait.

Zhu highlighted disrupted flight routes as a key example, noting that cross-strait air travel demand surged in 2025 with an average 80% passenger load factor. 'The Taiwan side must heed public opinion and remove unreasonable restrictions immediately,' she urged, emphasizing the economic and social costs of current policies.

Her remarks align with growing discontent among Taiwan residents and businesses, who report mounting challenges in maintaining cross-strait trade and personal connections. Analysts suggest the DPP's stance could further isolate the region economically, particularly as Southeast Asian markets accelerate integration efforts.

Zhu reaffirmed Beijing's commitment to fostering 'practical cooperation' in technology, agriculture, and tourism, urging Taiwan compatriots to reject what she called 'retrogressive actions' harming shared interests.
