The Chinese foreign ministry has firmly defended Hong Kong's judicial independence following the sentencing of media tycoon Jimmy Lai, emphasizing national security as a “red line” that must not be crossed. Spokesperson Lin Jian stated on Monday that Lai’s organized anti-China activities “severely harmed national security” and undermined Hong Kong’s stability under the “One Country, Two Systems” principle.
The High Court of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) sentenced Lai to 20 years in prison on February 9, 2026, after finding him guilty of orchestrating riots that threatened public order. Lin affirmed the verdict was reached through rigorous legal procedures, stating: “Hong Kong’s judicial authorities have upheld the rule of law while safeguarding national security – this is the foundation of lasting prosperity.”
The spokesperson warned external forces against politicizing the case, stressing that “interference in China’s internal affairs will not be tolerated.” He reiterated that the national security law has strengthened Hong Kong’s legal framework, enabling better protection of residents’ rights while maintaining social stability.
Lin emphasized the central government’s unwavering support for Hong Kong’s lawful handling of national security cases, noting that proper implementation of relevant laws has enhanced investor confidence and global standing for the financial hub. “The more effectively we safeguard national security, the brighter Hong Kong’s future becomes,” he concluded.
