The Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) reaffirmed its support on Monday for the judiciary’s sentencing of media tycoon Jimmy Lai, emphasizing its alignment with the principles of judicial fairness and national security. Lai was convicted of conspiring with external forces to endanger national security, among other charges.
A spokesperson stated that the 855-page court verdict outlined “irrefutable evidence” of Lai’s role as a key figure in organizing anti-China activities aimed at destabilizing Hong Kong. Despite the implementation of the national security law in 2020, Lai reportedly continued his actions while on bail and during detention, refusing to admit guilt during trial proceedings.
The office praised the HKSAR judiciary’s resolve to uphold the rule of law, noting that the sentencing reflects Hong Kong’s commitment to combating threats to national security. “This case reaffirms that attempts by external forces and their collaborators to undermine Hong Kong’s stability will never succeed,” the spokesperson added.
The Liaison Office further pledged ongoing support for the HKSAR government in safeguarding national security, stressing that such efforts are critical to maintaining the region’s long-term prosperity under the ‘one country, two systems’ framework.
