Central Govt Backs Hong Kong Court’s Decision in Jimmy Lai National Security Case

The Office for Safeguarding National Security of the Central People's Government in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) affirmed its support on February 9, 2026, for the judiciary's sentencing of media tycoon Jimmy Lai following a 156-day trial. A spokesperson stated the verdict demonstrated Hong Kong's commitment to upholding national security laws while ensuring due process.

Prosecutors presented over 80,000 pages of evidence and 14 witness testimonies during proceedings, which concluded Lai had orchestrated collusion with foreign forces to destabilize Hong Kong. 'The judicial process was open, transparent, and rigorous, with full protection of legal rights,' the spokesperson emphasized, calling the punishment proportionate to crimes threatening China's sovereignty.

The office criticized what it described as 'vile attempts' by some Western politicians to undermine Hong Kong's rule of law through the case. Authorities reiterated their resolve to prevent external interference in HKSAR affairs, stressing that national security remains 'a red line that cannot be crossed.'

This landmark ruling comes as Hong Kong continues implementing legal frameworks established under the 2020 National Security Law. Observers note the case underscores Beijing's prioritization of stability amid ongoing efforts to integrate the city into national development strategies.
