The tenth edition of the Singapore Airshow opened this week with a historic debut: China's C919 narrow-body jet soared through Southeast Asian skies in its first international flight demonstration. The Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China (COMAC) showcased its flagship aircraft at Changi Exhibition Center, signaling Beijing's ambition to reshape the global aviation market dominated by Boeing and Airbus.
Spectators witnessed the 158-192 seat jet perform precision maneuvers over coastal waters, a logistical adaptation for this year's event. COMAC emphasized the C919's advanced cockpit design and cabin improvements, including noise reduction and enhanced air filtration – features positioning it as a modern rival to the Boeing 737 MAX and Airbus A320neo.
Beyond the aerial display, COMAC's exhibition footprint includes three aircraft: a standard C919, a C909 regional jet medical variant capable of ophthalmic surgeries, and a TransNusa-operated commercial C909. The medical configuration marks its Southeast Asian premiere, reflecting COMAC's strategy to diversify beyond traditional passenger transport.
With over 200 aircraft delivered across its C919 and C909 platforms, COMAC reports 36 million passengers carried to date. Nine C909s already operate in Indonesia, Laos, and Vietnam – evidence of growing regional traction. The manufacturer aims to leverage this airshow to secure its first major international orders beyond the Chinese mainland market.
The event continues through February 8, with industry negotiations dominating the first four days before opening to public aviation enthusiasts this weekend.
