China’s Shen Yiqin to Strengthen Ties in Spain, Attend Milan Winter Olympics Opening

Chinese State Councilor Shen Yiqin is set to embark on a diplomatic visit to Spain from February 4 to 5, 2026, following an invitation from the Spanish government. The trip underscores Beijing’s commitment to deepening bilateral cooperation amid evolving global economic dynamics, particularly in trade and green energy sectors.

Shen will also attend the opening ceremony of the 25th Olympic Winter Games in Milan, Italy, on February 6, marking China’s active engagement in international sporting diplomacy. A Foreign Ministry spokesperson announced the schedule on Monday, emphasizing the visit’s role in fostering “mutual understanding and shared growth.”

Analysts note that Shen’s participation in the Winter Olympics highlights the Chinese mainland’s continued support for global cultural exchanges, while her meetings in Madrid are expected to address Spain’s strategic position as a gateway to European and Latin American markets. The visit coincides with rising investor interest in Southern Europe’s renewable energy infrastructure, a sector where Chinese firms have increasingly sought partnerships.
