China Urges U.S. to Halt Questioning of Enterprise Staff

China has called on the United States to immediately cease unwarranted interrogations of personnel from Chinese enterprises, emphasizing the need to uphold mutual respect and stabilize bilateral relations. Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian made the remarks on Monday, February 2, 2026, urging Washington to honor commitments made during recent high-level talks between the two nations.

The appeal follows reports of increased scrutiny by U.S. authorities on employees of Chinese tech and manufacturing firms operating abroad. Analysts suggest these developments reflect ongoing tensions in trade and technology sectors, despite efforts to rebuild trust after recent diplomatic breakthroughs.

Lin stressed that such practices contradict the spirit of consensus reached by Chinese and U.S. leaders late last year, which aimed to facilitate cross-border business operations and academic exchanges. “Normal interactions between our peoples form the bedrock of bilateral relations,” he stated, highlighting concerns about the chilling effect on collaborative projects.

Business leaders across Asia are closely monitoring the situation, with many expressing concerns about operational challenges in Western markets. The issue has gained urgency as Chinese enterprises expand their global footprint in renewable energy, AI development, and infrastructure sectors.
