China's renewable energy sector achieved a historic breakthrough in 2025, with clean power sources now constituting over 60% of the nation's total installed electricity generation capacity, according to data released this week by the National Energy Administration (NEA). This acceleration in green energy deployment positions the country as a global leader in climate action while reshaping its economic landscape.
The NEA report reveals that wind and solar installations grew by more than 430 million kilowatts last year alone, pushing cumulative capacity beyond 1.8 billion kilowatts. Renewable energy generation reached 4 trillion kilowatt-hours in 2025 – enough to power all households in the European Union for 18 months – demonstrating the operational scale of China's clean energy infrastructure.
Analysts attribute this progress to strategic investments in western provinces' solar farms and coastal wind projects, coupled with advancements in grid storage technology. The transition aligns with China's dual carbon goals while creating new export opportunities in renewable tech manufacturing.
