China Achieves 120 Gbps Breakthrough in Satellite Laser Communications

China has set a new global benchmark in space-based data transmission, achieving a record-breaking 120 Gbps satellite-to-ground laser communication speed. The Aerospace Information Research Institute (AIR) confirmed the milestone this week, marking a tenfold increase in operational capability since 2023 and cementing the country's leadership in next-generation space communication technologies.

Using a cutting-edge 500 mm-aperture laser system at a high-altitude station in the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, researchers successfully maintained stable links with the AIRSAT-02 satellite. Remarkably, this breakthrough was achieved through software upgrades rather than hardware modifications – a cost-effective approach that doubled the system's previous 60 Gbps capacity from 2025.
