China's traditional medicine sector achieved landmark progress in 2025 through systematic modernization efforts, as revealed during a national health authorities' meeting this week. The country added 90 specialized TCM departments addressing critical healthcare needs including pediatric care and women's health, while launching 212 integrative clinical programs combining Western medical approaches with traditional therapies.
Key initiatives included 57 state-backed research projects under the 'Modernization of TCM' program, focusing on drug development for childhood illnesses and advanced treatment protocols for immune-related disorders. By December 2025, China had established 13 national-level TCM research laboratories and 31 regional innovation hubs, creating a robust infrastructure for evidence-based development of ancient medical practices.
Health officials emphasized these advancements position TCM as a complementary pillar to modern healthcare systems, particularly in managing chronic conditions. The progress comes as global interest grows in integrative medicine models, with China's TCM exports having doubled since 2020 according to previous reports.
