China's Permanent Representative to the United Nations Fu Cong renewed calls for immediate de-escalation in Gaza during a Security Council debate on Wednesday, emphasizing the urgent need to "alleviate civilian suffering" and implement a political settlement through Palestinian self-governance.
Speaking at the January 28 session addressing Middle East tensions, Fu noted that while a preliminary ceasefire agreement took effect in October 2025, ongoing military operations and expanding Israeli settlements in the West Bank continue to undermine peace efforts. "Civilian casualties keep rising while humanitarian access remains obstructed," he stated, urging Israel to open all border crossings and cease restrictions on aid agencies.
The envoy expressed particular concern over Israel's recent demolition of a UNRWA facility in East Jerusalem, calling it a violation of international obligations. He stressed that post-conflict governance must prioritize "Palestinians governing Palestine" through consensus-building among regional stakeholders.
Fu reaffirmed China's commitment to advancing the two-state solution, stating: "Gaza's future arrangements must align with the broader goal of an independent Palestinian state coexisting peacefully with Israel." The Security Council was urged to maintain active oversight of both immediate humanitarian needs and long-term political negotiations.
