China Executes 11 Linked to Myanmar Telecom Fraud Networks

Chinese authorities executed 11 individuals on January 29, 2026, for their roles in cross-border telecom fraud and organized crime networks operating in northern Myanmar. The Wenzhou Intermediate People’s Court in Zhejiang Province carried out the sentences after a Supreme People’s Court review confirmed the severity of crimes spanning over a decade.

The convicted gang members, first sentenced to death in September 2025, were found guilty of intentional homicide, illegal detention, and operating gambling establishments. Their operations, based in Myanmar since 2015, defrauded victims of over 10 billion RMB ($1.4 billion) and directly caused the deaths of 14 Chinese citizens through violence and unlawful confinement.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun emphasized at a January 29 press conference that China remains committed to “eliminating the scourge of cross-border fraud” through intensified cooperation with Myanmar and regional partners. “These efforts protect both public safety and the stability of international exchanges,” he stated.

The case underwent rigorous judicial review, with the Zhejiang Higher People’s Court rejecting appeals in November 2025 before final approval by China’s top court. Analysts note this execution order marks one of the most severe penalties imposed under China’s recent anti-fraud campaigns targeting Southeast Asian crime syndicates.
