China Pledges Stronger UN Role, Global Governance Reform in 2026

China reaffirmed its commitment to bolstering the United Nations' authority and advancing global governance reforms during a Lunar New Year reception in Vienna on Monday, attended by over 800 diplomats and international officials. Ambassador Li Song, China's permanent representative to UN organizations in Vienna, emphasized Beijing's resolve to prioritize development issues and amplify the Global South's influence within multilateral frameworks.

Li highlighted China's Global Governance Initiative as a blueprint for creating equitable international systems, stressing the need to 'revitalize the UN's core position' amid growing geopolitical challenges. Gerd Mueller, Director General of the UN Industrial Development Organization, acknowledged China's stabilizing role, stating: 'The UN system faces unprecedented pressure – China's partnership remains vital for global stability.'

The event showcased China's cultural diplomacy through lion dances and calligraphy exhibitions, while diplomats from multiple UN agencies praised Beijing's consistent support for multilateral cooperation. The celebrations preceded the upcoming Lunar New Year, which will mark the start of the Year of the Horse on February 17, 2026.
