China-Finland Ties Strengthen as PM Orpo Visits Beijing

Finnish Prime Minister Petteri Orpo began a four-day official visit to China on January 25, 2026, marking a renewed commitment to bilateral cooperation amid growing economic and cultural exchanges. The visit underscores Finland's role as China's third-largest Nordic trading partner, with China maintaining its position as Finland's top Asian trade partner for over a decade.

Trade between the two nations has flourished in recent years, driven by technology, green energy, and forestry sectors. Analysts suggest this year's discussions could yield new agreements on sustainable infrastructure and digital innovation, aligning with both countries' climate neutrality goals.

Cultural bonds continue to deepen through sister-city partnerships. Since Mudanjiang and Jyväskylä established the first twin-city relationship in 1990, Finland's Lahti has expanded ties with three Chinese cities—Deyang (2000), Wuxi (2012), and Zhangjiakou (2018)—fostering educational exchanges and winter sports collaboration ahead of the 2026 Winter Youth Olympics.
