China Urges Fair Market Access for EU Investments in 2026

The Chinese government reaffirmed its commitment to fostering bilateral economic cooperation with Europe during a press briefing on January 21, 2026. Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun stated that China supports investments by its enterprises in Europe under market principles, aligning with recent calls by French President Emmanuel Macron for increased Chinese engagement in EU markets.

Macron, speaking at the World Economic Forum in Davos earlier this week, emphasized the need for a "fair, non-discriminatory, and transparent" environment for Chinese companies. Guo echoed this sentiment, highlighting that China-EU trade relations thrive on mutual benefit and industrial complementarity. He stressed that Chinese competitiveness arises from innovation, robust supply chains, and market-driven practices rather than state subsidies.

"China aims to be both the world's factory and the world's market," Guo said, urging European partners to adopt a long-term vision for collaboration. The remarks come as economic ties between the two regions continue to shape global trade dynamics in 2026.
