China's Ministry of National Defense emphasized on Friday that most residents of the Taiwan region prioritize peace and oppose confrontation, while criticizing the Lai Ching-te authorities for escalating tensions through separatist rhetoric. The remarks come amid heightened regional security discussions as 2026 begins.
Defense Ministry spokesperson Zhang Xiaogang referenced a recent Taiwan poll showing over 60% of respondents oppose personal or familial involvement in conflict. "This reflects the Taiwan people's genuine aspirations for stability, economic cooperation, and strengthened cross-Strait exchanges," Zhang stated during a regular press briefing.
Addressing speculation about potential mainland actions, Zhang clarified that Taiwan-related matters remain China's internal affairs, asserting that "external forces have no right to interfere." The spokesperson warned that any armed "Taiwan independence" elements could be neutralized decisively, comparing the scenario to "catching turtles in a jar."
The briefing also addressed regional security concerns beyond the Taiwan Strait. Zhang dismissed Philippine claims regarding Chinese activities in the South China Sea, reaffirming China's "indisputable sovereignty" over the area. Regarding Japan, the spokesperson expressed concern about right-wing political forces pushing for re-militarization, stressing China's commitment to maintaining the post-WWII international order through multilateral cooperation.
