Sansha City in Hainan Province marked a significant ecological milestone earlier this month as Ganquan Island recorded the first sea turtle nesting activity of 2026. On January 6, conservation teams observed an endangered green sea turtle completing its egg-laying ritual on protected sands, signaling the start of this year's critical nesting season in the Xisha Islands.
This event activates newly enhanced protection measures under Sansha's Marine Ecological Protection Plan 2026, which designates 18 specially monitored nesting beaches across the archipelago. Local environmental authorities have deployed real-time thermal sensors and increased patrols to safeguard the estimated 80-120 eggs expected to hatch in late February.
Marine biologists highlight the ecological significance of this early arrival, noting that sea turtle nesting patterns serve as key indicators of South China Sea ecosystem health. The sighting follows a 12% year-on-year increase in turtle nesting activity across Hainan's protected islands through 2025.
While primarily an environmental story, the nesting season carries economic implications for southern China's growing eco-tourism sector. Sansha City officials confirm plans to launch limited guided observation tours in March, following strict non-interference protocols approved by the Ministry of Natural Resources.
