China Champions Global Polar Cooperation Amid Antarctic Rescue Missions

China reaffirmed its commitment to fostering international collaboration in polar affairs during a foreign ministry press briefing on January 15, 2026. Spokesperson Mao Ning highlighted recent acts of Antarctic solidarity, including the rescue of a Russian researcher and logistical support for South Korean scientists during China's 42nd expedition.

Mao emphasized that China has prioritized mutual assistance since initiating Antarctic research 40 years ago. The current expedition involves experts from over ten countries and regions, including Thailand, Chile, and Portugal, conducting joint studies on climate resilience and marine ecosystems.

In the Arctic, China continues to engage through platforms like the Arctic Council and China-Nordic Arctic cooperation symposiums. Recent joint expeditions have focused on sustainable shipping routes and permafrost research, with findings shared openly through UN climate forums.

"Peaceful cooperation in the poles isn't optional—it's imperative for humanity's shared future," Mao stated, underscoring China's role in advancing climate diplomacy through science-driven partnerships.
