China strengthened its space collaboration with African nations on Thursday with the successful launch of the AlSat-3A remote sensing satellite from Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center. The Long March-2C rocket deployed the Earth observation satellite into orbit at 12:01 p.m. local time, marking the 626th mission for China's Long March rocket family.
Developed by the China Academy of Space Technology (CAST), the satellite will enable advanced land resource mapping and natural disaster monitoring capabilities for Algeria. This joint project between China Great Wall Industry Corporation and the Algerian Space Agency forms part of a comprehensive 2023 agreement that includes twin satellites and ground infrastructure development.
The launch continues a decade-long space partnership that began with the 2017 deployment of Algeria's Alcomsat-1 communication satellite. Analysts note this collaboration demonstrates growing technological exchanges between China and Global South nations in critical infrastructure projects.
"This mission underscores our commitment to peaceful space applications that benefit socioeconomic development," stated a CAST representative during the launch webcast. The satellite's high-resolution imaging capabilities are expected to assist Algerian authorities in urban planning and climate resilience strategies.
