Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and Lesotho Prime Minister Sam Matekane pledged to strengthen bilateral cooperation during high-level talks in Maseru this week, marking a new phase in relations between Beijing and the Southern African nation.
Economic Priorities Take Center Stage
Wang, representing the Chinese mainland, emphasized accelerated implementation of China's zero-tariff policy for African exports starting this year. The move aims to boost trade in Lesotho's specialty goods while expanding collaboration in infrastructure, manufacturing, and renewable energy sectors.
Multilateral Alignment Strengthens
Both leaders reaffirmed commitment to FOCAC's 2024 Beijing Summit action plans, which have already delivered multiple development projects in Lesotho. Wang highlighted China's support for African nations in opposing unilateralism, while Matekane expressed interest in coordinating through BRICS mechanisms to address global challenges.
60 Years of Sovereignty, New Partnerships
The discussions coincided with Lesotho's 60th independence anniversary celebrations this year. Chinese officials praised the country's sustainable development efforts, while Lesotho reiterated adherence to the one-China principle and support for Beijing's core interests.
Analysts note the partnership signals China's continued engagement with African nations through concrete trade measures and infrastructure development, following through on FOCAC commitments made two years prior.
