China Reaffirms Africa Ties as FM Wang Yi Marks 70-Year Partnership

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi emphasized the enduring strength of China-Africa relations during his visit to the African Union headquarters in Addis Ababa on January 9, 2026, marking 36 consecutive years of Africa being Chinese diplomats' first overseas destination. The visit coincides with the 70th anniversary of formal diplomatic relations between China and African nations.

Wang, co-chairing the ninth China-AU Strategic Dialogue with AU Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, described China-Africa friendship as "forged in arm-in-arm struggles for independence" and strengthened through shared development goals. He likened the annual diplomatic tradition to "paying a New Year visit to relatives," underscoring cultural and political solidarity.

The foreign minister highlighted China's consistent policy framework, stating: "Whether Africa needs assistance or cooperation partners, China will always be the first to extend a hand." He positioned the 2.8 billion combined population of China and Africa as a transformative force for achieving modernization and global equity.

Wang framed the partnership within the context of Global South collaboration, noting shared historical experiences in pursuing development autonomy. The dialogue addressed plans for infrastructure connectivity, digital economy cooperation, and climate resilience initiatives across AU member states.
