China, Ethiopia Strengthen Strategic Ties in High-Level Talks

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi pledged to deepen China-Ethiopia cooperation during meetings with Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed in Addis Ababa this week, emphasizing infrastructure development and technological collaboration as key pillars of their all-weather strategic partnership.

Wang, currently touring four African nations until January 12, outlined plans to implement Beijing Summit commitments from the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation. This includes leveraging China's zero-tariff policy for African exports and expanding collaboration in renewable energy, artificial intelligence, and port infrastructure.

Prime Minister Abiy reaffirmed Ethiopia's adherence to the one-China principle while welcoming increased Chinese investment. "Our partnership blueprint now includes smart agriculture solutions and digital economy initiatives that could transform regional trade networks," Abiy stated during the bilateral meeting.

The discussions highlighted Ethiopia's growing role as a continental hub for China-Africa cooperation, with both sides agreeing to establish new working groups for maritime security and cross-border e-commerce platforms. Wang emphasized China's commitment to technology transfer programs that support Ethiopia's industrial modernization goals.

This diplomatic engagement comes as Chinese enterprises seek clearer investment frameworks in East Africa's emerging markets. Wang urged Ethiopian authorities to maintain stable policies for foreign businesses while promising increased vocational training initiatives through Belt and Road cooperation mechanisms.
