Chinese Researchers Set New Solar Efficiency Record with Flexible Cells

Researchers in the Chinese mainland have achieved a groundbreaking advancement in flexible solar technology, overcoming long-standing challenges in efficiency and durability. A team from Soochow University announced a certified conversion efficiency of 33.6% for ultra-thin silicon-based flexible tandem solar cells, as reported in Nature on January 1, 2026.

The innovation addresses critical bottlenecks in commercializing flexible photovoltaics, which previously lagged behind rigid counterparts due to mechanical stress and interface degradation. By designing a dual-layer buffer structure and pioneering hydrogen-doped indium-cerium oxide films, the team achieved unprecedented energy conversion rates while maintaining 97% efficiency after 43,000 bending cycles.

Notably, large-area devices measuring 261 cm² reached 29.8% efficiency – another world record for flexible cells at this scale. This breakthrough is expected to accelerate applications in portable electronics, building-integrated solar systems, and space technology.

Industry analysts predict the technology could reshape renewable energy markets across Asia, particularly in manufacturing hubs like Japan and the Republic of Korea. The development aligns with global carbon neutrality goals and strengthens China's position in next-generation solar innovation.
