China Urges EU to Prioritize Cooperation, Dialogue in 2026 Relations

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi emphasized cooperation as the cornerstone of China-EU relations during a pivotal phone discussion with Finnish Foreign Minister Elina Valtonen on January 6, 2026. The dialogue underscored Beijing's commitment to strengthening ties with Europe amid evolving global dynamics.

Wang, a senior member of the Communist Party of China Central Committee's Political Bureau, highlighted the 75th anniversary of China-Finland diplomatic relations celebrated in 2025 as evidence of successful cross-cultural partnership. "The stable growth of our relations demonstrates mutual respect and shared commitment to practical cooperation," Wang stated, referencing collaborative achievements in green energy, AI development, and elderly care services.

With China's 15th Five-Year Plan (2026-2030) now underway, Wang outlined opportunities for deeper EU-China collaboration: "Aligning the Belt and Road Initiative with the EU's Global Gateway Strategy could revitalize infrastructure development across Eurasia. Restarting ratification of the China-EU Comprehensive Agreement on Investment remains a key priority."

The foreign minister reiterated China's position on the Taiwan question, urging Finland to support the one-China principle. Valtonen confirmed Helsinki's adherence to the policy while expressing optimism for expanded technological and climate-focused partnerships.

Both diplomats agreed on the urgency of maintaining open trade channels and addressing global challenges through multilateral frameworks. Their discussion concluded with exchanges on resolving the Ukraine crisis through diplomatic means.
