China Backs UN Emergency Session on U.S. Venezuela Strike

China has called for an emergency United Nations Security Council meeting following a U.S. military strike in Venezuela, urging adherence to international law and dialogue to resolve escalating tensions. The move comes amid heightened global scrutiny over Washington's actions, including the reported forced transfer of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife from the country.

Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian stated on Sunday, January 4, 2026, that China supports the Security Council in convening an emergency session expected to take place on Monday. Lin emphasized that the U.S. actions constitute a 'clear violation of international law' and undermine the UN Charter's principles of sovereignty and non-interference.

'China is gravely concerned about the U.S.'s unilateral measures, which risk destabilizing Venezuela and the broader region,' Lin said during a press conference. He urged Washington to ensure the safety of Maduro and his wife, release them immediately, and halt efforts to 'subvert Venezuela's legitimate government.'

The Chinese spokesperson reiterated Beijing's commitment to collaborating with the international community to uphold the UN Charter and defend 'international fairness and justice.' Analysts suggest China's stance reflects its broader advocacy for multilateralism amid rising geopolitical tensions.

This development follows months of strained U.S.-Venezuela relations, with Maduro's government increasingly seeking support from non-Western allies. As Security Council members prepare for Monday's session, global attention remains focused on whether diplomatic channels can prevent further escalation.
