China Demands Immediate Release of Venezuelan President Maduro by U.S.

China has issued a strong appeal to the United States to release Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife, following reports of their alleged forcible seizure. A Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson stated on Sunday, January 4, 2026, that the U.S. action violates international law and undermines diplomatic norms.

The spokesperson emphasized concerns over the safety of Maduro and his spouse, urging Washington to “stop efforts to overthrow the Venezuelan government” and prioritize dialogue. “This move blatantly disregards the purposes of the UN Charter and basic principles of international relations,” the statement read.

The escalating diplomatic tension highlights growing global scrutiny over extraterritorial interventions. Analysts suggest this development could further strain U.S.-China relations, particularly amid ongoing debates about sovereignty and non-interference in domestic affairs.
