China's Deep Sea No. 1 offshore gas field achieved a milestone in 2025, producing over 4.5 million tonnes of oil equivalent, state-owned China National Offshore Oil Corporation (CNOOC) announced this week. The output matches that of a medium-sized onshore oilfield, underscoring its strategic role in meeting energy demands across the Chinese mainland and beyond.
Operational since 2021 with its second phase launched in 2025, the project represents China's most technically challenging deepwater gas development to date. It operates at unprecedented pressures and temperatures while functioning in waters deeper than 1,500 meters – a record for domestic offshore exploration.
Currently, the gas field produces 15 million cubic meters of natural gas daily alongside 1,600 tonnes of condensate oil. Analysts highlight its contribution to stabilizing regional energy supplies amid growing industrial and residential demand.
The phased development reflects China's advancing deepwater extraction capabilities, with CNOOC prioritizing technological innovation to access harder-to-reach reserves. This progress aligns with broader efforts to enhance energy security while transitioning toward cleaner fuels.
