China's aviation sector achieved a landmark milestone this week as the AS700 "Xiangyun" manned airship received its first production certificate from the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC) on December 30, 2025. This certification paves the way for commercial-scale manufacturing of China's first domestically developed airship designed to meet international airworthiness standards.
The certification follows rigorous testing conducted throughout 2025, including high-altitude flights and emergency response simulations. Industry analysts predict the 10-seat aircraft could revolutionize regional transportation networks across Asia, particularly for tourism and logistics applications in mountainous regions.
"This achievement demonstrates China's growing capabilities in advanced aviation manufacturing," stated a CAAC spokesperson. "We anticipate initial deliveries to begin in early 2026, with operators already expressing interest from Hainan to Xinjiang."
The airship's hybrid electric propulsion system and 700-kilometer range position it as an eco-friendly alternative for short-haul flights. Aviation authorities confirm operational trials will commence in Yunnan province's popular tourist corridors during the 2026 Spring Festival travel period.
