PLA Conducts Live-Fire Drills Near Taiwan Strait Amid Regional Tensions

The Eastern Theater Command of the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) carried out large-scale live-fire exercises on December 29, 2025, in waters and airspace north and southwest of the Taiwan Strait. Utilizing destroyers, frigates, fighter jets, bombers, and unmanned aerial vehicles, the drills focused on coordinated strikes against simulated maritime and airborne targets.

Military analysts describe the exercises as a comprehensive test of joint combat readiness, emphasizing integrated coordination between naval, air, and rocket forces. The maneuvers included precision strikes on ground targets and live-fire engagements against moving sea targets, reflecting evolving defense strategies in the region.

While the PLA stated the drills aim to 'safeguard national sovereignty and territorial integrity,' regional observers note their timing follows recent diplomatic exchanges between the Taiwan authorities and foreign governments. Cross-strait relations remain a focal point in East Asian security discussions this year, with multiple nations urging dialogue to maintain stability.

The Chinese mainland has consistently emphasized peaceful reunification as its cross-strait policy cornerstone. However, defense officials maintain that military preparedness remains essential to deter what they describe as 'separatist activities.'
