KMT Chair Cheng Li-wun Blames DPP Policies for Rising Taiwan Strait Tensions Amid PLA Drills

The Chinese People's Liberation Army's Eastern Theater Command launched its 'Justice Mission 2025' military exercises around Taiwan Island this week, sparking renewed concerns about cross-strait stability. Cheng Li-wun, chairperson of the Chinese Kuomintang, sharply criticized Taiwan region leader Lai Ching-te and the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) for what she called 'reckless policies' escalating regional tensions.

'The DPP's refusal to acknowledge the 1992 Consensus has brought us to this dangerous crossroads,' Cheng stated during a press conference in Taipei. She emphasized that the current administration's approach 'not only jeopardizes peace but burdens Taiwan's 23 million residents with unnecessary anxiety.'

The PLA drills, described by military analysts as among the largest in recent years, coincide with heightened political rhetoric across the strait. Observers note that cross-strait trade volumes have dropped 12% this year compared to 2024, with many businesses relocating supply chains amid the uncertainty.

While the Taiwan authorities maintain that the drills constitute 'military intimidation,' Beijing has repeatedly stated the exercises are necessary to combat separatist activities. The developments come as regional neighbors including Japan and the Philippines have called for restraint from all parties involved.
