China Achieves Forestry Conservation Goals in 14th Five-Year Plan

China has significantly advanced its forestry and grassland germplasm conservation efforts during the 14th Five-Year Plan (2021-2025), with official data revealing a 180% surge in collected samples compared to 2020 levels. The National Forestry and Grassland Administration confirmed that 147,400 germplasm samples have been secured this year, marking a milestone in ecological preservation.

Key achievements include enhanced protection of genetic resources for native tree species, rare plants, and critical grassland varieties. Improved seed utilization rates for major afforestation species now stand at 76%, up from 65% in 2020, reflecting strengthened biodiversity management.

Through a three-year action plan launched in 2022, authorities expanded conservation infrastructure to seven national germplasm facilities and 209 regional preservation sites. These efforts align with China's broader strategy to balance ecological security with sustainable development goals.

Researchers highlight the program's role in safeguarding endangered species while creating scientific frameworks for future climate resilience initiatives. The progress comes as global attention intensifies on Asia's environmental stewardship ahead of key UN biodiversity targets.
