China Launches World’s First 30MW Pure Hydrogen Gas Turbine

China has achieved a clean energy breakthrough with the successful operation of the world's first 30-megawatt pure hydrogen gas turbine, named "Jupiter I," which began stable power generation today, December 28, 2025. This landmark project demonstrates full-cycle hydrogen energy utilization at industrial scale, converting renewable electricity into hydrogen and back to power without fossil fuels.

The system integrates wind, solar, and electrolytic hydrogen production to address renewable energy waste during low-demand periods. By storing surplus electricity as hydrogen, it provides reliable peak-hour power while reducing annual carbon emissions by 200,000 tonnes compared to traditional thermal plants. Wang Yongzhi of Mingyang Hydrogen Gas Turbine Technology noted the turbine can generate 48,000 kWh hourly in combined-cycle mode – enough to power 5,500 households daily.

Analysts highlight the project's role in stabilizing power grids amid fluctuating renewable output. As China advances its hydrogen-focused energy transition, this model offers a blueprint for global decarbonization efforts while enhancing energy security through efficient storage solutions.
