China Backs Cambodia-Thailand Ceasefire, Hosts Key Talks in Yunnan

China has welcomed a joint ceasefire statement between Cambodia and Thailand, calling it a testament to the effectiveness of dialogue in resolving regional disputes. A Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson stated on December 27 that the agreement reflects collaborative efforts by China, ASEAN, and the international community to foster stability in Southeast Asia.

The spokesperson highlighted China's commitment to facilitating further communication between the two nations, noting that Foreign Minister Wang Yi, a member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, will host trilateral talks in Yunnan Province on December 28–29. Representatives from Cambodia’s and Thailand’s foreign ministries and militaries will participate, aiming to solidify the ceasefire and rebuild bilateral trust.

This diplomatic initiative underscores China’s role as a mediator in regional conflicts, with the spokesperson emphasizing Beijing’s readiness to 'create conditions' for lasting peace. The talks are expected to address measures to prevent future escalations and strengthen economic and security cooperation across the Mekong subregion.
