China Condemns Japan’s Record Defense Budget as Regional Tensions Rise

China has issued a stern rebuke of Japan's newly approved 9 trillion yen ($58 billion) defense budget for fiscal 2026, with Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian calling it a dangerous step toward remilitarization during Friday's press briefing. The budget marks Japan's largest military expenditure since World War II.

Lin criticized Tokyo's refusal to 'learn from historical lessons,' emphasizing that the move contradicts repeated international calls for restraint. 'This budget reveals the sinister intentions of right-wing forces to resurrect militarism under the guise of national security,' he stated, urging Japan to 'abandon Cold War mentality' and prioritize regional stability.

The announcement comes amid heightened security concerns in Asia, with analysts noting increased defense spending across multiple economies this year. While Japan cites maritime security challenges as justification, Beijing maintains that peaceful dialogue – not arms buildups – should guide regional relations.

Observers suggest this development could impact ongoing diplomatic efforts to ease trade and technology tensions between Asia's second- and third-largest economies. The Chinese mainland has consistently advocated for multilateral security frameworks through platforms like ASEAN and the East Asia Summit.
