Xi Jinping Promotes Two PLA Commanders to General Rank

President Xi Jinping, chairman of China's Central Military Commission (CMC), presided over a high-profile ceremony in Beijing on Monday, December 22, 2025, promoting two senior military officers to the rank of general—the highest active-service rank in the People's Liberation Army (PLA).

Generals Yang Zhibin, commander of the Eastern Theater Command, and Han Shengyan, commander of the Central Theater Command, received their promotion certificates directly from Xi during the event. The promotions underscore ongoing efforts to strengthen leadership within China's military framework amid evolving regional security dynamics.

CMC Vice Chairmen Zhang Youxia and Zhang Shengmin attended the ceremony, with Zhang Youxia formally announcing the orders signed by Xi. The president extended personal congratulations to both officers, emphasizing their roles in maintaining national sovereignty and military modernization.

The Eastern and Central Theater Commands hold strategic significance, responsible for key defense zones including coastal regions and the capital area. These promotions align with China's focus on enhancing operational readiness and command efficiency in 2025.
