Lhalu Wetland Claims Title as World’s Highest Urban Wetland

The Lhalu Wetland National Nature Reserve in southwest China's Xizang Autonomous Region has made history by earning recognition as the world's highest-altitude natural urban wetland. Verified by the World Record Certification Agency (WRCA) during a ceremony held at the site on December 20, 2025, this ecological treasure reaches an average elevation of 3,649 meters above sea level.

Spanning 12.2 square kilometers within Lhasa's urban boundaries, the wetland serves as a crucial oxygen source for the regional ecosystem while supporting rare species like the black-necked crane. Local authorities emphasize its dual role in environmental preservation and sustainable tourism development, particularly following recent infrastructure upgrades completed this year.

Conservation experts highlight the wetland's strategic importance in maintaining water security for over 200,000 residents and mitigating climate change impacts through its carbon sequestration capabilities. The certification comes as Asian nations intensify focus on ecological preservation ahead of the 2030 UN Sustainable Development Goals deadline.
