China's largest offshore oilfield, the Bohai Oilfield, has achieved a historic milestone by producing over 40 million tonnes of oil equivalent in 2025, according to a Sunday announcement from the China National Offshore Oil Corporation (CNOOC). This record output underscores its pivotal role in supporting the Chinese mainland's energy security and economic development amid global demand shifts.
Operating more than 60 active oil and gas fields, the Bohai Oilfield has cumulatively produced over 600 million tonnes of crude oil since its inception. CNOOC highlighted a steady 5% annual growth in production over the past five years, driven by advanced extraction technologies and strategic investments.
The oilfield is also spearheading sustainable innovation, with over 80% of its facilities now connected to onshore power grids to reduce carbon emissions. Breakthroughs in domestic equipment development, including the deployment of China's first locally designed shallow-water subsea production system, mark significant progress in technological self-reliance.
Analysts note that the Bohai Oilfield's achievements align with broader efforts to stabilize energy supplies while transitioning toward greener practices. This dual focus positions the Chinese mainland to meet industrial and household energy needs while advancing its 2060 carbon neutrality goals.
