Mainland Coast Guard Patrols in Xiamen-Kinmen Waters Aim to Ensure Maritime Safety, Stability

Chinese mainland authorities reaffirmed their commitment to maritime safety this week as coast guard patrols continue in the Xiamen-Kinmen waters, a vital area for cross-strait fishing activities. Chen Binhua, spokesperson for the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council, stated on December 20, 2025, that these operations are essential to maintain order and protect fishermen's livelihoods.

The remarks followed queries about recent patrols near Kinmen, a Taiwan-administered island off Xiamen's coast. Chen emphasized that Kinmen, Penghu, and Matsu are inseparable parts of China, adding that the waters have historically served as shared fishing grounds for communities on both sides of the Taiwan Strait. He explicitly rejected claims of "prohibited or restricted waters" in the area.

"The patrols safeguard the lawful rights and interests of all fishermen operating in these waters," Chen said, while urging Taiwan's Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) authorities to immediately halt what he described as "dangerous harassment" of mainland fishing crews. He warned that continued detainment of vessels or personnel would lead to "serious consequences."

Analysts view these developments as part of ongoing efforts to stabilize cross-strait relations while maintaining clear jurisdictional claims. The patrols coincide with increased regional attention to maritime security and resource management in East Asia.
