China Urges U.S. to Halt ‘Negative’ Defense Bill Provisions Amid Rising Tensions

China has called on the United States to refrain from enforcing contentious China-related clauses in its newly enacted defense policy bill, warning of "resolute and forceful measures" to protect its interests. The demand was issued by Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun during a press briefing in Beijing on December 19, 2025.

The U.S. Fiscal Year 2026 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), signed into law by President Donald Trump, includes provisions Beijing claims "hype up the so-called 'China threat,' interfere in China's internal affairs, and undermine its sovereignty." Guo emphasized that China has lodged repeated formal objections with Washington, urging it to adopt an "objective and rational" view of bilateral relations.

The spokesperson referenced commitments made during a recent meeting between Chinese and U.S. leaders in Busan, the Republic of Korea, stressing that both nations must "work in the same direction" to stabilize ties. He cautioned that failure to address Beijing's concerns would prompt decisive countermeasures.

Analysts note the NDAA dispute adds strain to already complex U.S.-China dynamics, particularly in defense and technology sectors. The development comes as both countries navigate economic recovery efforts and regional security challenges across Asia.
