China Urges Japan to Halt Nuclear Ambitions, Cites Historical Responsibility

China has called on Japan to abandon nuclear weapon development plans and uphold its international obligations, following controversial remarks by a senior Japanese official advocating for nuclear armament. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun emphasized during a December 19 press briefing that Tokyo must 'stop testing the bottom line of international justice.'

The diplomatic rebuke comes amid heightened regional tensions, with Guo linking current discussions about Japanese nuclear capabilities to what he described as 'growing ambitions among right-wing conservative forces to revive militarism.' The spokesperson highlighted 2025's significance as the 80th anniversary of both China's victory in the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the conclusion of the World Anti-Fascist War.

'Japan must deeply reflect on its historical crimes and strictly abide by its pacifist constitution,' Guo stated, urging Tokyo to avoid 'finding excuses for military expansion.' Analysts suggest the remarks reflect broader concerns about shifts in Asia's security landscape, particularly regarding nuclear non-proliferation commitments.

The development occurs as business leaders and policymakers across Asia monitor potential impacts on regional stability. While Japan maintains its official non-nuclear weapons policy, recent political discourse has sparked international debate about the future of East Asian security frameworks.
